DESCRIPTION
This unique exercise guides your family through a discussion of direct prompts to discover your family's metaphorical "DNA". Like a band of sailors on a ship, it helps you discover who you already are — and how you all want to operate as afamily unit.
After getting through the "slog" of the early/elementary years, this interactive exercise is not just a simple selection of ideals from a list. It's an active inquiry and collaborative reflection on your family's habits and choices, done together as a group so no one is singled out.
You'll come out on the other side of it knowing better where you all spend your time, where you spend your money, and what matters most to your unique family. That family culture or "DNA" that makes your family so unique.
Timeframe to Complete it: Approx. 90min+ Depends on how deep your ages want to take it, or how deep the discussion gets. Best completed near Pre-teen years (11-13). But still helpful for those near 16 to be involved.
Best Timing: We do recommend doing this when everyone's fed, so after dinner on a non-school night is likely the best option. That said, it can be done either at home, or in a park setting. Whatever setting ends up suiting your family is the "right answer" for YOUR FAMILY. Getting it done is better than doing it "perfectly".
WHY / WHO IS THIS FOR
Similar to the "frogs in slowly boiling water" analogy, this exercise helps kids to realize that what "Family" is exactly is something you all get to decide, and create each day. They'll be better able to see how they've slowly grown through their toddler years and their elementary years, and family is something they get to BUILD WITH YOU, from scratch, and dynamically “on-the-fly”. It's not built through mom and dad’s efforts alone.
Now that they're older and can express their ideas better, can be accountable for their time, and can contribute to family life, we all have our own individual ideas about what family is or should be. So this activity gives each of you the chance to discuss it and decide what we want our family ship to be, what it'll look like, where it'll go. That way, when a sharp turn to the left or right needs made or an iceberg is hit once in a while, it’s not SO difficult to navigate. The teamwork is already in place to coordinate the turn. (And yes, it may take more than just this one session together; this is just kind of a first session, to hear everyone be heard.)
So as parents, try to commit to giving this little project a “season” like, “Ok Family, this spring we’re all gonna sit down a couple times and make an effort to complete this exercise and "Decode your Family’s DNA”.
